What You Actually Need Before a Family Photoshoot (And What You Don’t)

Before you book a family photoshoot with me or another day-in-the-life family photographer, here’s what matters… and what doesn’t.

If you’ve ever thought you needed to lose weight, deep-clean your home, or bribe your children into perfect behaviour before stepping in front of the camera, this is for you.

Because here’s the truth: your real life, right now, exactly as it is, is already photoshoot-ready.

(Day-in-the-life photography may also be called documentary family photography, family reportage or family photojournalism.)

Your body is ready exactly as it is

You don’t need to change your body before a photoshoot. Not one thing about it.

If the thought “I’ll wait until…” has crossed your mind (wait until I’m more comfortable, more confident, more something), I understand.

But here’s what I know:

Your children need you in these photos. Now. Not someday. Not after. Now.

You’re ready exactly as you are.

Makeup is your call

Makeup or no makeup, it doesn’t matter to me.

What matters is that you look like you. The version your children see most days.

If you wear makeup every day, wear it. If you never do, don’t. If it depends on the day, let it depend on the day.

There’s no wrong answer here. Just what feels like you.

Wear clothes you like and feel good in

Not your “best” outfit. Not something new you bought for the occasion.

But also not something you hate or feel uncomfortable in.

Pick the jeans that fit just right. The jumper you reach for without thinking. The dress that makes you feel like yourself.

Clothes you already own and actually wear, that’s the wardrobe of your real life. That’s what we’re documenting.

Lived-in homes tell better stories

I’m not here to photograph your house.

I’m here to photograph your life in it.

Children baking with adult in kitchen.

The toys, the dishes… they aren’t clutter. They’re context.

The lived-in details (the stack of books by the bed, the art project still drying on the table, the shoes kicked off by the door), these tell the story of how you actually live. And that’s the story worth documenting.

Perfect homes don’t exist. Real ones do. And real is always more powerful.

Your children don’t need to behave

The tears, the giggles, the silly faces, the moment they hide behind your legs, their unique personalities and facial expressions… I want all of it.

I’m not looking for performance or compliance.

I’m looking for them. Exactly as they are in this moment of their lives.

The photos your children will treasure later won’t be the ones where they stood still and smiled on command. They’ll be the ones that capture who they actually were: real & uniquely them.

Ordinary days become extraordinary memories

The school run. Saturday morning chaos. The ordinary Tuesday where absolutely nothing happens except everything that matters.

These are the moments you’ll want to remember in ten years.

Not just the perfectly planned, everyone-dressed-up occasions. But also the everyday ones. The ones that feel so ordinary right now that you almost can’t see them.

Let’s bottle them now, before they disappear into the blur of busy life.

What you actually need for a family photoshoot

Here’s the complete list of what you need before booking a documentary family photoshoot:

  1. To show up
  2. To be yourself
  3. To let me take care of the rest

That’s it.

You don’t need to prepare, perform, or perfect anything. You just need to be here, in your real life, on a regular day, exactly as you are.

The rest? I’ll handle it.
